Four Quincy wrestlers qualified for the Mat Classic at the Tacoma Dome after strong outings at the 2A Region Four Championships in Cheney on Feb. 15.

Sophomore Israel Perez, senior Oswaldo Perez, junior Mykenzie Realme and senior Ruben Vargas all finished in the top four of their respective weight classes to reach the state tournament in the Tacoma Dome on Feb. 21 and 22. Quincy senior Alex Bonilla was the only Jack wrestler to fall short of qualifying for the state tournament.

In the 126-pound class, Israel Perez defeated Clarkston’s Mick Brown by an 8-3 decision in the first round before falling to Toppenish’s Emerique Gonzales by pin in the second round. In the consolation bracket, Perez defeated Othello’s Forrest Roylance by a 6-4 sudden victory. He earned a fourth place finish after losing to Grandview’s Jesus Sanchez by a 5-1 decision in the third place match.

In the 152-pound class, Oswaldo Perez lost his opening match with Toppensh’s Juan Escamilla Jr. by a 7-0 decision. In the consolation bracket, Perez defeated West Valley Spokane’s Kegan Richter by pin and Othello’s Jonathan Gomez by a 10-8 sudden victory in the following round. In the third place match, he then defeated Selah’s Ethan Garza by pin to claim third place. 

In the 170-pound class, Realme defeated West Valley Spokane’s Micah Petersen by a 17-8 major decision in the first round before losing to Toppenish’s Isaias Ramirez by a 6-4 decision in the second round. In the consolation bracket, Realme beat Ellensburg’s Richard Wellington by technical fall. He then fell to Cheney’s Anthony Aguilera by a 3-1 decision in the third place match to claim fourth place.

In the 220-pound class, Vargas defeated West Valley Spokane’s Logan Crosby by pin then Selah’s Tietan Nelson by a 5-0 decision in the following round. Vargas fell in the championship match to Selah’s Amadeo Pimentel by a 10-5 decision to claim second place. 

In the 160-pound class, Bonilla fell to Ellensburg’s Lorenzo Gonzalez by pin in the first round. In the consolation bracket, he then lost to Othello’s Nathan Garza Jr. by pin.
