Lady Jacks players throw to warm up at the start of practice on March 11. About 40 girls turned out for the team this season.

Heading into the 2020 season, the Jacks softball team is looking to build off of last year.

The Lady Jacks finished the 2019 campaign with a 4-16 record and fell to Prosser in the opening round of the Central Washington Athletic Conference tournament. Last year’s roster was young with only three seniors, third-year Head Coach Pauline Baughman said.

This year’s team features two prominent seniors, Braguely Cruz and Aileen Perez, Baughman said. Perez will lead the infield from the shortstop position and Cruz the outfield. The remainder of the team is made up of juniors and sophomores, including Rosey Combs, Vanessa Castillo and Mia Ramirez, among others.

“I think we have a lot of potential and I really want that growth to be shown,” Baughman said.

Baughman’s goal for the team this season is to compete with some of the top teams in the conference and be one of the top teams in the CWAC Division Two. The other teams in the division include Grandview, Toppenish, Wapato and Prosser, who defeated the Lady Jacks last season’s conference tournament by an 11-0 score.

Not only does Baughman hope to be at the top of the division, she wants the team to represent their new facilities well and put their best foot forward.

“I really want to represent our new facility well because it’s amazing and we’re so blessed to have our two new fields,” she said.
